Nose Surgery in Chester NJ

Rhinoplasty, sometimes called a “nose job”, is a transformative procedure that can address a variety of concerns, including reshaping the nose, correcting asymmetry, refining the nasal tip, or improving breathing function. Rhinoplasty is one of the most common plastic surgical procedures performed each year and the procedure continues to gain popularity at a rapid rate. According to the American Academy of Facial Plastic Surgeons (AAFPRS) 2023 annual survey, rhinoplasty is repeatedly the most common facial plastic surgery procedure in the United States.1
At Urban Facial Plastics, we strongly believe in a personalized approach to rhinoplasty. We begin with a thorough consultation, during which we take the time to understand your unique goals, concerns, and expectations. Dr. Urban believes that the consultation is the most important part of a patient’s rhinoplasty journey. Because each patient has different goals for their nasal appearance, Dr. Urban feels strongly that rhinoplasty should be a 100% customized operation. Finding a surgeon who completely understands your goals is very important. In order to ensure open communication and understanding in every rhinoplasty consultation, Dr. Urban uses advanced imaging technology to simulate the surgical results. Dr. Urban and the patient then carefully review the simulations to build a surgical plan which is customized to align with the patient’s specific needs.
Nasal Form and Function
Dr. Urban feels strongly that any discussion about rhinoplasty must address the absolute most important feature of any nose: breathing. Nasal breathing is of critical importance to living a healthy and balanced lifestyle ‡. In fact, studies show that at least ⅔ of patients who undergo revision rhinoplasty cite breathing problems as a reason for seeking revision nasal surgery.2 Many people undergo rhinoplasty to change the shape of their nose, but Dr. Urban has seen far too many cases where the nasal breathing was an afterthought during the patient’s original surgery. This is not a fair compromise. Trust your nose to a facial plastic surgeon who specializes in surgery for both breathing and appearance to find the right balance for your face.
Rhinoplasty Techniques
Dr. Urban is an expert in all cutting-edge rhinoplasty approaches and techniques including “open rhinoplasty”, “closed” or “scarless rhinoplasty”, “conventional hump reduction rhinoplasty”, and “preservation rhinoplasty”. Open rhinoplasty involves making an incision at the bottom (columella) of the nose to lift up the skin and directly manipulate the nasal cartilages and bones. Closed or “scarless” rhinoplasty is performed through incisions inside the nose. In closed rhinoplasty the cartilage and bone are reshaped under the skin and typically less surgical dissection is performed, which may improve healing times. Conventional hump reduction or “Joseph” hump reduction rhinoplasty involves lowering a bump on the bridge of the nose by shaving it from the top. Preservation rhinoplasty is so-named because the hump is treated by removing or repositioning the cartilage and bone from below, while the surface structures of the nose are “preserved”. Dr. Urban is one of very few surgeons in the United States who is an expert in preservation rhinoplasty and also closed or scarless rhinoplasty. Read more about his philosophy on this topic here*.

Rhinoplasty FAQs
After nasal growth is complete* (early to mid teenage years for most individuals), any patient may undergo rhinoplasty as long as they are in good health. Many patients who are bothered by their nasal appearance choose to undergo surgery early in early adulthood, while others choose to wait until they are older.
*Note: in certain cases, nasal surgery is performed before nasal growth is complete. Be sure to consult with an experienced rhinoplasty surgeon if you are considering nasal surgery before mid teenage years.
The average rhinoplasty takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours.
The majority of patients choose to have general anesthesia for a rhinoplasty, although in certain cases surgery under sedation or with numbing shots alone may be an option.
The average cost of a rhinoplasty is $8,000-$14,000.
There is usually very little pain after rhinoplasty, but temporary nasal congestion is almost always experienced. Patients are cleared for light activity such as extended walking and household duties a few hours after surgery. Most patients return to work/school between 6-8 days, and patients are asked to refrain from heavy activity such as weight lifting for at least 3 weeks due to the risk of a nosebleed and swelling after surgery.
The results after rhinoplasty are immediate. Like all surgery, the body then responds with swelling. Swelling in the nose tends to have more of an effect in the lower part of the nose and, certain refinements, particularly in the nasal tip area are often not seen for a few weeks. For this reason, Dr. Urban generally recommends undergoing rhinoplasty at least 6 weeks before big events. After the initial swelling improves, the nasal tip area will have periods of more subtle swelling throughout the first year. These can be triggered by diet, alcohol, allergens, weather, and heavy exercise among other causes. Many patients say the result “continues to get better” even after 1 year as the nasal skin thins and narrows over time. A good rhinoplasty surgeon will take into account these skin changes over time during the surgery. Dr. Urban’s top priority is leaving patient’s with a nose that breathes and looks great for a lifetime.
