Mole and Nevus Removal

Skin Mole Removal in Chester NJ

Skin Mole Removal in Chester NJ

In a mole removal procedure, the plastic surgeon shaves, cuts, freezes, or treats a mole to remove it from the skin. This procedure is generally quick and may allow the healthcare provider to test the mole for skin cancer. Most moles are harmless, but removal might be recommended if a mole looks suspicious or for cosmetic reasons.

Moles often appear during childhood or adolescence and can range in color from your natural skin tone to pink, brown, or black. They may develop for genetic reasons or in sun-damaged skin. People with darker hair or skin tend to have darker moles. Moles can be flat or raised from the skin surface. While most moles are harmless, any concerns about their appearance or changes in color, shape, size, or bleeding should prompt a visit to a healthcare provider.

Reasons for Mole Removal

  • Atypical Moles: Removal of atypical moles (nevi) allows testing (biopsy) to determine if the growth is cancerous (malignant) or precancerous.
  • Cosmetic Reasons: Some people choose to remove moles due to their location or appearance.
  • Curative Treatment: If a plastic surgeon removes a mole with clear margins (the area around the mole), it can serve as a curative treatment for skin cancer that hasn’t spread.

Can a mole come back after removal?

Depending on the type of treatment a mole may grow back (recur). A treatment where the mole is cut out in its entirety (excised) has an extremely low rate of recurrence (often near 0%). However, this method requires sutures or skin closure and will leave a scar where the mole was removed. Another frequently chosen option is a shave excision where the top layers of skin are removed, but the underlying layers of skin are left intact which allows the skin to heal with a much lower risk of scarring. The downside of this technique is there is a higher risk of the mole growing back with some studies showing a rate of roughly 1 in 10.* Consult with your plastic surgeon if your mole is in a sensitive area to plan the safest method for treatment with the lowest risk of scarring.

Aftercare after mole removal

Aftercare is usually very simple but focuses on preventing infection and scarring. Initially, applying ointment to keep the site from becoming dry and protection from the sun is very important to prevent the healing skin from darkening. As the healing is complete, patients should continue monitoring moles for changes or signs of a new skin cancer. Remember to consult a healthcare provider for personalized advice and recommendations regarding mole removal.
